Barcelona stars paid tribute to the outgoing manager and legend of the club, Xavi Hernandez, after the team's final game of the season on Sunday.
The Catalans escaped with a 2-1 victory at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium in Seville to end the 23/24 campaign and ensure the manager leaves on a winning note.
Robert Lewandowski opened the scoring in the 15 minutes after Cancelo clipped a perfect pass into the box, and the striker arrived to steer in his 19th La Liga goal of the season in a typical goal-pocher's finish from close range.
Sevilla struck back in 31 minutes after Soumare walked past Christensen and slips a precise low pass through to En-Nesyri; the prolific Moroccan striker clinically finishes it from a tight angle, beating ter Stegen at the near right post.
Fermin Lopez was rewarded in the 59th minute for his industrious display. The La Masia star receives a killer pass from Gundogan outside the area, drives into the box, and drills a shot into the bottom left corner in trademark fashion.
Eighth La Liga goal this season for Fermin! The Barca Atletic graduate couldn't ask for a better send-off for the man who gave him the chance to play on the biggest stage of club football.
The match ended 2-1, and Fermin has this to say:
"I wanted to thank Xavi for the opportunity and the confidence of being on the first team. My family and I will be eternal
grateful. The work is paying off, but it was impossible to imagine that things would go so well the first year."
Pedri, another star of the night whose shot unfortunately rattled against the crossbar after latching onto an accurate pass in the box, was also thankful to the manager.
"Xavi is a 10/10 manager and person. I wish him luck on his next stage with a lot of love. I grew up watching Xavi and Iniesta. Having Xavi as a manager was an honor. I wish him all the best; he deserves it."
Ter Stegen also dropped an epic performance to wow his manager once again. He denied Pedrosa's low shot in the 22 minutes, tipped away a great hit from Lukebakio in the 24th minutes, and pawed away another powerful curling shot from Pedrosa in the 73 minutes to ensure Barcelona goes home with all points therein.
Here's what Stegen said about his boss after the game:
“We are going to compete next season for more titles. It’s been a difficult campaign, and let’s hope we have a more successful one next season,” he told the media.
“Xavi’s given us so much in a professional sense, working hard every day so we could succeed. We wish him the best, and we hope it goes well on a personal level. He's been a friend for a long time.
“It’s never easy to leave or say goodbye; he deserves the best, and that’s what we wish him. We will always be with him.”
The whole team bid farewell to the coach and the staff as they set to join a new manager.
Hansi Flick has been chosen as the one to lead Barcelona next season. The former Bavarian coach will be unveiled soon, and we hope he gets the team running smoothly as expected.
