Joan Laporta: Deco Handpicked Hansi Flick as Barcelona’s New Manager

After FC Barcelona's recent Copa del Rey final victory over Real Madrid, club president Joan Laporta opened up about the club’s decision to appoint Hansi Flick as the first-team coach.

In his post-match interview, Laporta made it clear that the choice was driven by sporting director Deco.

"The person who decided that Hansi Flick would become the first-team coach is Deco. It's a signing made by Deco," Laporta stated firmly.

Laporta explained that the appointment followed a meticulous internal process led by Deco, with the help of former Barcelona player Bojan Krkic.

"Deco and Bojan led the in-depth analysis. I liked Flick from the beginning, but they conducted a thorough evaluation of him, both from a footballing and a personal perspective," he added.

While acknowledging that other managerial options were considered, Laporta made it clear that Deco and Bojan’s assessment convinced the board that Flick was the right fit for Barcelona’s future.

"I completely trust Deco and Bojan. They understood exactly what Barcelona needed and, after serious evaluation, they chose Flick," he concluded.

Hansi Flick’s Instant Impact at Barcelona

Since arriving at Camp Nou, Hansi Flick has wasted no time in making a huge statement. In less than seven months, Flick has already delivered two major trophies for Barcelona:

  • Spanish Super Cup: Barcelona thrashed Real Madrid 5-2 in the final, played at the King Abdullah Sports City stadium in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia).
  • Copa del Rey: Once again, Flick’s side overcame Real Madrid, winning 3-2 in a dramatic final held in Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville.

Beyond the silverware, Flick has revitalized the team’s spirit and tactical discipline. Barcelona currently sit at the top of La Liga with four points clear off the second placed team, with only five matches left in the season — putting Blaugrana in a strong position to reclaim the domestic title.

Moreover, Barcelona have also made significant strides in Europe. Flick boys has advanced to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League, where they are set to face Italian giants Inter Milan in a highly anticipated showdown.

Why Hansi Flick Was the Right Choice

Flick’s coaching philosophy — emphasizing aggressive pressing, fast transitions, and trust in young talents — perfectly matches Barcelona's traditional DNA.

His previous success at Bayern Munich, where he won an incredible six trophies in a single season, highlighted his ability to manage top-level squads and compete for the biggest titles.

Now at Barcelona, Flick has quickly won the trust of the dressing room, rekindled fan excitement, and set the club on a path toward a potentially historic season.

The decision to back Flick, led by Deco and supported by Laporta, is already paying dividends — and Barcelona fans around the world are starting to dream again.
