Manchester City forward Lauren Hemp is on the verge of leaving the club for FCBarcelona Femeni at the end of the season, a report said.
SBNATION revealed that necessary processes are ongoing, and the player is already slowly gathering her bags and baggage for the big move into the Catalan side.
Hemp's contract is said to expire at the end of the season, and all means to keep the player at the Academy Stadium have proved abortive.
Well, this is a win-win for both parties if it pulls off. Hemp will have the opportunity to play UEFA Champions League football with a huge chance of clinching the title, while Barcelona enjoys the services of the player without spending a dime on a transfer fee.
For those who scarcely follow female football, Hemp is currently one of the best wingers in the world and has been a key to City's overwhelming performances in the FA Women's Super League this season.
Lauren Hemp, Chloe Kelly, and Khadija Shaw have fired 30 times past the netminders in all competitions this season, and eight of those goals have come from the boots of the pacey winger.
She has six goals and three assists in the league, with 14 matches played, and they're tied on 34 points with Chelsea. Both are sitting in the number one spot, have the same goal difference, and have just eight matches to go.
For the record, Manchester City have not lifted the prestigious prize in eight years, but their win-it-all attitude this season means the title is theirs to lose.
We can all feel the hunger in their performance away to Chelsea the last few days in a match that ended 0-1 in favor of City. The result is a testament to this claim.
And if they eventually win it, Hemp will be singing 'Hosanna! Hosanna' in the loudest voice because it won't only be her first league title; she'll also be bowing out in tantalizing fashion.
Should Hemp jump ship at a crucial time in the team's progress?
Barcelona Femeni are the reigning European champion, having won the cup last season, and the 23-year-old would make them even stronger.
Worse still is the fact that one of City's brightest stars will leave the club at a time when she is becoming a key figure both for City and the English national team.
However, there's still the option of filling the void with Mary Fowler. The Australian forward came in the summer of 2022 but has featured mostly as a substitute. Much like Julian Alvarez on the men's team, Fowler can play all through the front line and also fit into the midfield position.
It'll be difficult to completely fill the gap that Lauren Hemp will leave if she eventually decides to move to Spain, but it's great news to City faithfuls that there's someone on the ground to salvage the situation.
That said, the official agreement hasn't been met, nor has the player or the management made a public announcement yet. Let's wait until the end of the season to discover the true state of things.
Hopefully, she comes to Barcelona. Pairing her upfront with Bruna, Hansen, or Mariona would be a spectacle.
