The sheer size and intensity of the Estadi Olimpic crowd was an emotional wildcard.
Hot, sizzling, steady and excruciating, majestic, profound, and sonorous. It was all there. A sense of unity and excitement that is hard to replicate elsewhere.
FC Barcelona, tagged 'ridiculous' and 'collapsed', hosted Napoli in the Champions League round of 16 second leg at the Montjuic Olympic Stadium on Tuesday night, after the 1-1 draw in Naples three weeks ago.
It was a fiesta night of footballing. The stadium was packed with nobles and bourgeoisie. There was everything to play for. And Xavi Hernandez’s youngsters took center stage.
For those who missed out completely, here's how it went down:
The Catalan giant was looking to make a quick start from the first sound of the whistle.
2nd minute: Lewandowski lays off a superb pass to Fermin when Gundogan plays him in. He unselfishly tees up Lamine Yamal, but the 16-year-old lifted his first-time effort over the bar.
6th minute: Napoli, after soaking up Barcelona's early pressure, decides to threaten. Politano scooped a good early ball over the top to Osimhen, but the Nigerian striker drilled his low shot straight at the palms of Ter Stegen.
10th minute: Traore squeezed a pass to Osimhen, who tried to play a one-two with Kvaratskhelia and open up a pocket of space. The latter loops the return pass over the top of Kounde, but the striker couldn't bring it down.
This time, Barcelona felt the threat and called up Araujo and Cubarsi for a solution. Araujo walked to Kvaratskhelia, picked him up, and placed him in his kit pocket. Cubarsi followed with Osimhen; now that the party was devoid of distractions, Barcelona, backed by the roaring crowd, started dictating.
Gundogan began orchestrating things in the midfield more efficiently. Fermin and Yamal started dazzling. Raphina and Cancelo started trotting.
15th minute: The first goal of the night came through the boots of a 20-year-old La Masia boy, Fermin Lopez.
Cancelo slides a good through ball to pick out Raphina. The Brazilian rolled the ball to the unmarked Fermin, and he coolly slotted it past Meret, the Napoli goalkeeper.
17th minute: Napoli committed bodies forward as they pushed for a quick equalizer, leaving themselves exposed.
Yamal picked up a loseball, shaved off the head of an obstructing defender and darted through the spaces in between the midfield before laying a glorious through-ball to Raphina, who cut inside and curled his effort against the far post. Fortunately, Joao Cancelo was right in the box to drill his first-time effort into the net. FC Barcelona 2-0 Napoli!
An unforgettable night laced with sheer scale of cheering and screaming, the cacophony blended together like white noise, and the Naples side was completely routed.
However, just when Culers thought the Italian side had been completely cajoled and contained, they struck!
30th minute: Out of nowhere, Rrahmani pulled one back. Traore slides a good ball to Politano; the right winger pulls it back from the byline to Rrahmani, who came up from the back, has acres of space in the box, and side-foots a composed finish past Ter Stegen. The score changed to 2-1!
While Napoli were still running around to see if they could make something happen, Xavi Hernandez thought it was due for the final kill.
Sergi Roberto came in for Fermin Lopez in the 60th minute. Oriol Romeu replaced Andreas Christensen. Joao Felix for Raphina, and it was enough to triple Francesco Calzona's frustrations.
Barcelona gained full control, pushed forward in numbers, and here comes the third goal in the 83rd minute after chances upon chances were blown away by the overstretched youngster, Lamine Yamal.
This time it was the Polish gem, Lewandowski, or better yet, Lewangoalski, who converted to alter the scoreline once more.
Sergi Roberto cuts inside from the left, playing a one-two with Gundogan to open a pocket of space in the box.
Roberto could've gone for goal, and I'm sure he wouldn't have missed, but he unselfishly squares the ball to Lewandowski, who was left with a simple tap-in into the bottom corner.
The score changed to 3-1, and that was more than enough for Barcelona's triumph. And so it ended!
We witnessed another barca tonight! The roar of the crowd, the chants, and the energy in the air all contribute to a truly immersive and intense experience.
The sheer scale of the stadium and the grandeur of the architecture further elevated the sense of occasion.
Xavi Hernandez won tactically, and all the players performed at an excellent level, and we won with full merit!
