Stats favors FC Barcelona in the Champions League match against Napoli

On the last four occasions when FC Barcelona drew 1-1 away in the first leg of a Champions League tie, they have gone on to advance every time.

In other words, FC Barcelona has advanced to the next stage on the last four occasions they have drawn 1-1 away in a UEFA Champions League match.

This stat has nothing to do with the opposite team's form. It doesn't matter if they're enjoying consecutive winning streaks or not.

For the draw at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium, you'll agree with me that the host isn't even deserving of a point.

Anyone who saw the game will completely nod to this statistical fact. And if you're in doubt, here's the stat:

As you can see, they had just one shot on target in the whole match, playing on their own turf, while Barcelona had six.

Yeah, they profited from the sole chance, and we could only score one from our load of shots on target, but we will not rule out the glaring fact, which is that the home team was abysmal on that night.

But all the same, it was a positive result from Naples. Their case won't be different, going by the record. They'll be annihilated at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on March 12.

For the record, the last four times the Blaugranes achieved a similar score on the road in a Champions League first leg, they've all qualified with little stress.

Starting from the most recent, Napoli in 2020. Barça drew 1-1 in Naples, with Griezmann scoring the only goal. The return leg at the Camp Nou ended 3-1 in favor of Barcelona.

The second time was against Chelsea in 2018. Barca played a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge, then won the second leg 3-0.

The third time was against Stuttgart in 2010, and they won by a spectacular 4-0. Things were just as emphatic in 2009, when they trounced Olympique Lyon 5-2.

While this record may give some rich gleam of hope to Culers, it's worthy to know that it had backfired twice on previous occasions.

Barca had gone out to lose on two previous occasions when they drew 1-1 away in the first leg.

The first was in the quarterfinals of 2003. Barça lost 3-2 at home to Juventus, and in a qualifying game for the 1992–93 group stage, they were stunned by a CSKA Moscow comeback and lost 3-2.

Should we be worried?

No, Barca is in good form at the moment, and our finest players are back from injury. I mean some of them. We're playing at home with the crowd behind the boys. That's more confidence. And most important, we have the record in our favor.
