Hansi Flick has officially replaced Xavi Hernandez as FC Barcelona coach on a two-year contract that'll last until 2026.
It's only been a few hours since the new manager strongly wanted by Joan Laporta signed, and there’s already plenty of talk about what the club can expect from the former Bayern boss.
German legend Lothar Matthaus offers a glimpse of the type of players Flick would love to have at the Spotify Camp Nou, although he does admit the manager might not be able to get what he wants.
“Florian Wirtz, Jamal Musiala... There are many players he would like to have with him at Barcelona, but they probably won’t be financially viable,” he said.
“He is a bit of a fan of Spain and spent many summers on vacation there with the whole family. I am happy for him after all the setbacks he had with Bayern Munich and the German national team.”
Mathaus also said that Flick is facing a “great challenge” but pointed out that he already knows several of the current first-teamers very well.
“For him, it is a great challenge despite the financial difficulties he will encounter in Barcelona,” he added.
“He will meet up with old friends in his new sporting project, such as Ter Stegen, Gündogan, and Lewandowski. Maybe he will take one or two more with him. ‘I don’t know’.”
Flick will be expected to work with the sporting director, Deco, to establish a healthy atmosphere with the players.
He's a fan of the league and, most importantly, the club. Reason he never thought of negotiating with any English club, as his dream job has always been at Barcelona, and he's here to rule until June 2026.
Which player will go and who's staying is yet to be known.
What's most important is that Flick is a winner, and he's shown that at Bayern in his two years as the Bavarian coach.
Flick at the Allianz Arena won back-to-back Bundesliga titles and led the club to its sixth and most recent Champions League title.
He also delivered the DFB-Pokal, DFL-Supercup, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup during his glittering time in Munich.
