Rafa Marquez wants to continue as Barcelona Atletic head coach

Barça Atletic boss and former Barcelona legend Rafa Marquez is happy about his job and would want to retain the position amid speculations over his future.

Marquez was appointed head coach of Barcelona B, or Barça Atletic, on July 20, 2022, on a two-year contract that expires at the end of the season, and there have been some doubts over whether he will continue.

The Mexican was asked if he sees himself leading the youngsters next season after his team’s 2-1 promotion play-off win over Ibiza, and he was positive."

"Of course I would like promotion, but it is getting ahead of the future,” he told reporters.

"As I have already said throughout the season, I go game by game, and if it happens, we will see. But obviously, yes, I would like to continue.”

The Barca Atletic coach also spoke about his team’s promotion hopes ahead of the second leg of their clash at the Estadi Johan Cruyff.

"There are 90 minutes left where everything can change. Now let’s enjoy the victory, and tomorrow it’s time to go back to work to try to arrive in the best possible way physically and try to finish the work at home,” he added.

"Today we will celebrate, but knowing that this week we have to make an effort to recover well because obviously the rival team is much stronger than us, I trust in trying to do well again in the home game and be able to advance to the playoffs.”

Marquez, in his first season in charge, led Barça Atletic to a fourth-place finish, qualifying for the promotional playoffs before being eliminated by Real Madrid Castilla 5-4 on aggregate.

The Mexican legend had been a possible contender to take over the Barcelona first team, but has seen those hopes dashed by the appointment of Hansi Flick.
