Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has opened up about how his time at FC Barcelona helped him escape one of the darkest chapters of his life.
“Before I signed for Barça, I was in a really dark place,” he said. “My parents were seriously ill, and I fell into depression… I even started drinking a lot. It was one of the lowest points in my life.”
But everything changed when he arrived in Catalonia.
“Those six months at Barcelona were the best of my career. The club gave me a chance when I needed it the most. I’ve never enjoyed football or training as much as I did during that time.”
Aubameyang's passion for the club was so deep, he would turn up to train even on off days:
“That says it all. It was unbelievable. I truly wish I could’ve stayed longer.”
Unfortunately, Barça’s financial challenges forced his departure:
“I was one of the few players they could sell. Otherwise, I really believe I would have stayed. I love everything about Barcelona—the club, the city, the fans. In just a few months, I felt real love from everyone.”
Despite leaving after only half a season, Auba left a lasting mark: he arrived on a free, scored twice in El Clásico, and exited with dignity.
Even after he was sold at the start of the 2022–23 season, his face appeared on the La Liga victory parade bus, and his name was printed on the champions' shirts—proof of how much he meant to the team and fans.
