Inter Miami proved unstoppable at Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Saturday night as Lionel Messi once again carried them to victory over D.C. United, 3-2.
Lionel Messi from early exchanges to the final whistle influenced every decisive moment setting up the opener, then scoring two second-half goals to seal the deal.
The game started evenly, with both teams probing without creating too much danger. Then in the 35th minute, Messi played a line-splitting pass behind the D.C. United defense.
Tadeo Allende seized it, one-on-one with the goalkeeper, and slotted it low into the bottom right corner. Inter Miami carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.
D.C. United responded early in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Christian Benteke converted a pass from Brandon Servania to draw level. That goal shifted momentum, and for a while Miami found themselves under pressure.
Messi struck back in the 66th minute. Jordi Alba delivered a precise pass into Messi, who turned sharply and finished with his left foot into the bottom right corner.
That goal gave Miami their lead again and reasserted their control. Then, in the 85th minute, Sergio Busquets found Messi just outside the box. Messi curled a left-footed shot past the goalkeeper, raising the cushion to 3-1.
D.C. United refused to go quietly. Jacob Murrell pulled one back in stoppage time, but by then time ran out and Miami held on.
With that win, Inter Miami moved to 52 points in the Eastern Conference, strengthening their playoff aspirations.
Messi now leads MLS in scoring this season with 22 goals and has 12 assists, having also tied for fourth in the league in assists.
That night also marked a significant personal milestone for Messi: his brace pushed his career total to 882 official senior goals across club and country, adding another chapter in his pursuit of 900.
